Infant choking manuever demonstration

During your American Heart Association Heartsaver adult, child, infant CPR and first aid training at CPR Tacoma, you will learn how to help an infant who is choking.

If the infant cannot breathe or make a sound, or, has a cough that makes no sound you must act quickly.

Hold the infant making sure to support their head and their jaw with your hand.

Place the infant face down on your forearm, then rest the infant on your leg.

The head should be slightly lower than the body.

Give up to 5 back slaps between the infant's shoulder blades using the heel of your hand.

If the object has not come out, turn the infant over on their back and give 5 chest thrusts with two fingers using the same placement as with CPR.

Continue performing sets of 5 back slaps and 5 chest thrusts until the object is out and the infant begins to cry or is otherwise responsive.

If the infant stops responding and goes unconscious, perform the steps of CPR
